CT Evaluation of Cystic Brain Tumor

Abstract
I analysed 28 cystic tumors of histologically proven 66 cases of brain tumors by CT scan at Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jan. 1988 to Dec. 1991.
@ES The results were as follows
@EN 1) I found cystic lesions in astrocytoma, glioblastoma, oligodendroglioma, hemangioblastoma, meningioma, craniopharyngioma, dermoid cyst and metastasis.
2) I analysed the cystic lesions in view of number, location, shape, the ratio of cystic leion in tumor, enhanced wall thickness, pattern of contrast enhancement, characteristics of inner and outer surfaces, peritumoral edema and calcification.
a) 66% of metastases were multiple lesions but the remainder showed single lesion.
b) The shape of cystic leions were round or ovoid in 75%, lobulated in 18% and irregular in 7% and no demonstrable differences of shape were noted in each other.
c) The ratio of cystic lesion is each tumor was more than 50% in all astrocytoma and dermoid cyst but nod demonstrable differences were noted in each other.
d) The wall of cystic lesions were thick in glioblastoma and metastasis and no indentifiable wall in dermoid cyst.
e) Pattern of contrast enhancement were ring enhancement, mural nodule enhancement and solid component enhancement and no demonstrable differences were noted in each other.
f) Irregular inner wall and smooth outer wall were noted in most of cystic brain tumors.
g) Peritumoral edema was more than grade II in most of glioblastoma and metastases.
h) Caclifications were noted in all craniopharngioma and oligodendroglioma.
